Review – Small Worlds

“Small Worlds” is a track off of Mac Miller’s 2018 album “Swimming”. The track has a slower tempo than what we’re used to in this day and age when it comes to rap. The song has a soft guitar and very basic drums all while Mac kinda drifts over the instrumental with his voice. He chose not to have any other vocals on this track beside his own, even on the chorus. Mac’s singing isn’t the best but it definitely has a certain feel to it, one that we wouldn’t get if he had somebody else sing for him. Mac plays around with some split audio on the chorus and the bridge, where his voice chimes in for a word or two in one ear then switches to the other. It’s strange at first but it doesn’t come off as being out of place. There is a beat switch near the end of the song that leaves us with a piano, some snapping for tempo and Mac. Mac drops the tone in his voice and we’re left with him just talking to us. He shares some wise words such as “do you want it all if it’s all mediocre?” and “win or lose, I don’t keep count nobody checking”.

The lyrics on the track are very thoughtful and show a lot of maturity in Mac. He’s very aware of his faults and where he is at in his life and in essence that is what the song is about. He does make time for a humble brag with the line “hard to complain from this 5-star hotel” but overall the lyrics are played down and the tone is soft.

Small Worlds is the closest thing to a title track of Mac Miller’s 2018 album Swimming. The chorus’ line “The world is so small ‘til it ain’t” is featured on the albums’ merchandise and serves as the tag line for the album as a whole. Small Worlds is one of the better songs off the album and encourage you to give it a listen if you’re in the mood for a slower, more calming rap song.
